John Maynard Keynes penned his General Theory in 1936. At the economic level, the success of New Deal Keynesianism may have contributed to its own undoing. Rising prosperity, built upon Keynesian policies and the postwar social contract between business and labor, may have engendered beliefs that the core economic problems of income distribution and mass unemployment had finally been solved. At the root of such differences is the relevant time frame for policy determination. On the one hand, Keynesianism postulates that it is critical to act on the short-term economic cycles and understand how the State can use public policy to smooth the cycle, mainly driven by the dynamics of the aggregate demand’s components.
