Most environmental chemicals and pesticides tested in Daphnia affect reproduction and growth of these sensitive water fleas. Many agricultural pest control chemicals, human remedies and so-called endocrine disruptive substances end up in sewage out-pulls that affect survival and life cycles of Daphnia and dependent organisms, thereby sensitive ecosystems in water bodies from which often our drinking water originates. Did you ever itch to catch a water flea? The name water flea is a nickname; it is also called a daphnia. These tiny critters are part of the freshwater plankton. A daphnia swims in a jerky motion, using branched antennae while eating algae, microscopic animals and organic debris.

It made its way to the Great Lakes by 1984 and probably reached our lakes not long after. Like Daphnia, which is also a type of water flea, Spiny Water Fleas can either reproduce asexually, to achieve very dense populations, or sexually, to produce hardy resting eggs.

Water flea daphnia

Water Fleas (Daphnia) in Slow Motion The shell does not cover the head. There are two eyes on it, although often they merge into one complex eye as they grow, and sometimes Daphnia has a third, but usually, it clearly stands out and has a smaller size. The Cladocera are an order of small crustaceans commonly called water fleas. Over 650 species have been recognised so far, with many more undescribed. They first appeared before the Permian period, and have since invaded most freshwater habitats. The Spiny Water Flea (Bythotrephes longimanus) is native to the freshwater lakes of Europe and Asia.

There are no males! Daphnia is one of the several small aquatic crustaceans commonly called water fleas because of their jerky swimming movements. The most prominent external features of Daphnia are a single large compound eye and two pairs of slightly branched antennae. Cladocera are commonly referred to as water fleas due to the hopping motion they make when moving about in the water.
