Your doctor will let you know which type of repair is best for you. The diagnosis, pathophysiology, physical exam findings including the murmur and treatment of a secundum type atrial septal defect is discussed. Secundum ASD o 50-70% of ASDs o Isolated defect o Twice as common in females o Simple mid-septum ASD Secundum ASD, same hole as PFO but hole is not covered by septum secundum Hole too big or septum secundum insufficient Results from arrested growth of secundum septum or excessive absorption of primum septum Secundum ASD.
